Turn the package around. The front of an electrolyte drink or powder is marketing. The panel on the back is the only place the actual amounts are printed — and reading it takes about thirty seconds once you know the order to go in.
- Serving size first. Every number below it applies to one serving, not the whole container. If a tub holds 30 servings and you use two scoops, you are getting double everything listed.
- Sodium. Usually the largest electrolyte number on the panel, and the one most worth knowing if you watch your intake for any reason.
- Potassium. Often much smaller than the sodium figure, even on products that market themselves around it.
- Magnesium. May not appear on the panel at all. That absence is a labeling rule, not necessarily a missing ingredient — more on that below.
- Added sugars. Listed separately from total sugars, so you can see how much was put in versus what occurs naturally.
- The % Daily Value column. This is your shortcut for whether a number is a little or a lot.
That is the whole method. The rest of this guide explains what each of those numbers means, what the label is not required to tell you, and where label reading stops being useful.
First, Figure Out Which Panel You Are Reading
Electrolyte products come in two regulatory flavors, and they carry different panels. Knowing which one you are holding changes what you can expect to find on it.
A Nutrition Facts panel means the product is regulated as a conventional food or beverage. Bottled sports drinks and most ready-to-drink hydration beverages fall here.
A Supplement Facts panel means the product is regulated as a dietary supplement. Many powders, sticks, drops, and tablets use this panel.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration published guidance in January 2014 specifically to help manufacturers determine which category a liquid product belongs in. Under that guidance, factors like the product name, serving size, packaging, and marketing language all influence the classification — words such as “drink,” “water,” or “refresh” point toward a conventional beverage, while directions written as a dose point toward a supplement.
Why this matters to you as a reader: the two panels follow different rules about what must be disclosed and what claims are permitted. Neither one is inherently more trustworthy. They just answer slightly different questions.
Start With the Serving Size
This is the single most common place people misread a label, and it is not a subtle error — it can double or halve everything else.
Check three things:
- What counts as one serving? One scoop, one stick, half a stick, one 16-ounce bottle, half a bottle.
- How many servings are in the container? Some single-serve-looking bottles contain two servings, which means the panel numbers describe half of what you would drink.
- How much do you actually use? If you routinely use more than the labeled serving, every figure on the panel needs to be scaled up in your head.
Do this step before you look at anything else, or the rest of the panel will mislead you in a direction you will not notice.
The Numbers Worth Knowing
Sodium
Sodium is typically the headline electrolyte. The FDA’s current Daily Value for sodium is 2,300 mg, and that figure is the reference point the % Daily Value column uses.
Electrolyte products vary enormously here. Some contain a modest amount comparable to a slice of bread; others deliver several hundred milligrams per serving. Neither is automatically right or wrong — but if you have been told by a healthcare provider to watch your sodium intake, this number belongs in your daily total rather than being treated as a rounding error.
Potassium
The Daily Value for potassium is 4,700 mg. Because that reference number is so much larger than sodium’s, a potassium amount that looks impressive in milligrams can still land at a low % Daily Value.
This is a common source of confusion. A product listing 200 mg of potassium and 200 mg of sodium is not delivering “balanced” amounts relative to daily needs — those two figures sit in very different places against their respective Daily Values.
Magnesium
Magnesium’s Daily Value is 420 mg. Here is the labeling quirk worth understanding: on a Nutrition Facts panel, only vitamin D, calcium, iron, and potassium must have their amounts and % Daily Values listed. Other vitamins and minerals may be listed voluntarily — but manufacturers are required to list any vitamin or mineral that was added to the food, or one they make a statement about on the packaging.
So if a beverage advertises magnesium on the front, it has to appear on the panel. If magnesium is absent from the panel entirely and absent from the front, it likely was not added in a meaningful amount. Supplement Facts panels work similarly — they must list the same nutrients when present in an amount greater than zero.
Magnesium is also where dose adds up faster than people expect. NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements sets the Tolerable Upper Intake Level for supplemental magnesium at 350 mg per day for adults, noting that high intakes from supplements or medications can cause diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramping. That limit applies to magnesium from supplements and medications, not the magnesium naturally present in food. Calcium and Chloride
Calcium’s Daily Value is 1,300 mg and chloride’s is 2,300 mg. Both appear on some electrolyte formulas, usually in small amounts. Chloride in particular often comes along for the ride, since sodium chloride and potassium chloride are common ingredient forms.
Added Sugars
The Daily Value for added sugars is 50 g. Labels list total sugars and added sugars separately, which is genuinely useful — added sugars tell you what the manufacturer put in.
Some hydration products contain a small amount of carbohydrate deliberately, because glucose plays a role in how the gut absorbs sodium and water. Others are sweetened purely for taste. The panel will not tell you which reason applies; it only tells you the amount. How to Use the % Daily Value Column
This column is the fastest interpretive tool on any label, and most people skip it.
The FDA offers a general guide: 5% DV or less of a nutrient per serving is considered low, and 20% DV or more per serving is considered high.
Applied to an electrolyte label, that means:
- A serving showing 20% DV sodium is a high-sodium serving by the FDA’s own general benchmark.
- A serving showing 3% DV potassium is a low-potassium serving, regardless of how prominently potassium appears on the front.
- Two products can be compared directly using this column even when their serving sizes differ in grams or ounces.
One caveat: some things on a label carry no % Daily Value at all. Total sugars have none, so use grams. Amino acids, botanical extracts, and many specialty ingredients have no established Daily Value either, and typically appear with a footnote saying so.
Read the Ingredient List, Not Just the Panel
The panel tells you amounts. The ingredient list tells you what those amounts are made of, and it sits in a separate place on supplement labels.
- “Other ingredients.” On a dietary supplement, ingredients that are not dietary ingredients — excipients, fillers, artificial colors, sweeteners, flavors, binders — appear in a list below the Supplement Facts panel, labeled “Other ingredients.” This is where you find the sweetener system, anti-caking agents, and coloring.
- Mineral forms. Sodium citrate, potassium chloride, magnesium malate, and magnesium oxide are all different compounds. The panel lists the elemental mineral amount; the ingredient list tells you the form it came in.
- Proprietary blends. If a product uses one, the label must disclose the blend’s total combined weight with the individual ingredients listed in descending order by weight. What it will not tell you is how much of each individual ingredient is inside. If a blend matters to your decision, that missing breakdown is a real limitation, not a detail you can infer.
- Allergens. U.S. law requires major food allergens to be declared, and sesame was added to that list under the FASTER Act. Check the “Contains” statement if allergens are relevant to you.
- Caffeine and other actives. Some hydration products include caffeine, amino acids, or botanicals. These change who the product is appropriate for, and they will not always be obvious from the front of the package.
What the Front of the Package Can and Cannot Tell You
Front-of-package language operates under different rules than the panel, and understanding the difference makes marketing copy much easier to read.
Dietary supplements may carry structure/function claims — statements describing the role of a nutrient in the body. These claims are not pre-approved by the FDA. The manufacturer must have substantiation that the claim is truthful and not misleading, must notify the FDA within 30 days of first marketing the product with that claim, and must display this disclaimer in boldface: “This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”
That disclaimer is not a red flag. It is a legal requirement, and its presence simply tells you the product is making a permitted supplement claim rather than a drug claim. What it does mean is that the claim above it has not been reviewed by a regulator before reaching the shelf.
It is also worth knowing that the FDA does not approve dietary supplements the way it approves prescription drugs. “FDA registered facility” language on a package refers to the facility, not to any review of the product’s contents or effectiveness.
Finally: the word “electrolyte” printed on the front tells you nothing about quantity. Only the panel does. Context: Everyday Electrolyte Drinks Are Not Oral Rehydration Solution
These two categories get blended together in casual conversation, and they are built for different jobs.
Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a clinical formulation. The World Health Organization’s low-osmolarity ORS delivers, once dissolved, sodium at 75 mmol/L, potassium at 20 mmol/L, chloride at 65 mmol/L, citrate at 10 mmol/L, and glucose at 75 mmol/L, for a total osmolarity of 245 mOsm/L. It was developed and refined for rehydration during diarrheal illness, and it is on the WHO’s essential medicines list in powder form.
A wellness or sports electrolyte drink is a consumer beverage. Some are formulated in a similar direction; many are not close. If the situation is illness-related dehydration — particularly in a child — that is a conversation for a healthcare provider, not a label comparison.
For everyday hydration, the reference point is broader than any single product. The National Academies set adequate intake levels for total water at roughly 2.7 liters daily for women and 3.7 liters for men, from all beverages and foods combined — with roughly 20% of typical intake coming from food. Most healthy people meet their needs by responding to thirst.
The Practical Label-Reading Checklist
- Identify the panel: Nutrition Facts (food/beverage) or Supplement Facts (dietary supplement).
- Read the serving size and servings per container. Compare to how much you actually use.
- Find sodium. Note both the milligram amount and the % Daily Value.
- Find potassium. Note that a large milligram figure may still be a small % Daily Value.
- Look for magnesium and calcium. If they are absent from the panel, check whether they are claimed anywhere on the package.
- Check added sugars separately from total sugars.
- Apply the 5%/20% rule to anything you are actively tracking.
- Read “Other ingredients” for sweeteners, colors, flavors, and additives.
- Scan for caffeine, amino acids, or botanicals you were not expecting.
- Check the allergen statement.
- If there is a proprietary blend, note that individual ingredient amounts are not disclosed.
- Add this product’s numbers to whatever else you already take. Supplements stack.
Limitations of Label Reading
Reading a label well tells you what a manufacturer has declared. It does not tell you everything, and it is worth being honest about the gaps.
- A label is a declaration, not a test result. It reflects the manufacturer’s formulation and stated amounts. Independent third-party verification, where it exists, is a separate matter from what is printed on the panel.
- Formulations change. The same product name can carry different ingredient lists across retailers, package sizes, or production runs. The panel on the container in your hand is the accurate one.
- Labels cannot tell you what your body needs. Individual sweat rate, sodium losses, climate, activity, diet, medications, and health conditions all vary. No panel accounts for any of that.
- Amounts are not outcomes. Knowing a serving contains 300 mg of sodium tells you the quantity. It does not tell you how you will feel or how the product will perform for you.
- Proprietary blends hide the breakdown. Total blend weight is disclosed; individual ingredient amounts are not.
Who Should Be Cautious
Electrolyte products are not one-size-fits-all, and a few groups have specific reasons to talk with a healthcare provider before adding one to a routine.
- Anyone with kidney disease or reduced kidney function. The kidneys regulate potassium and magnesium. Added amounts from supplements may not be appropriate when that clearance is impaired.
- Anyone taking blood pressure, heart, or diuretic medications. Several common medication classes affect how the body handles sodium and potassium. A prescriber or pharmacist can review a specific product against a specific medication list.
- Anyone advised to limit sodium. Serving-level sodium should be counted toward a daily total rather than treated as negligible.
- Anyone already taking magnesium. Supplemental sources add together, and the published upper limit for supplemental magnesium is a per-day figure across all supplement and medication sources.
- People managing blood sugar. Added sugars vary widely between products, and the panel is the place to check.
- Pregnant or nursing individuals. Worth a provider conversation before adding any new supplement.
- Children. Pediatric hydration during illness is a clinical question. Sports and wellness electrolyte drinks are not formulated as oral rehydration solution, and a pediatrician should guide that decision.
- Endurance athletes. Exercise-associated hyponatremia — a blood sodium concentration below 135 mmol/L developing during or shortly after prolonged activity — is associated with drinking hypotonic fluids in excess of losses. Anyone doing long-duration events should work out a hydration approach with a qualified sports medicine or dietetics professional rather than improvising from labels.
A Note on Interactions
NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements notes that magnesium supplements can interact with or interfere with some medicines. Because electrolyte formulas frequently combine several minerals with other added ingredients, the practical step is to show the actual label — or a photo of it — to a pharmacist alongside your current medication list.
